St. Peter's Episcopal Cathedral - Memorial Garden Columbarium

The columbarium is scheduled to be constructed in 2010.  The picture below is an artistic rendering.

In ages past the church provided resting-places for the dead in or around local buildings of worship, a continuing witness thereby of the risen life. The Columbarium at Saint Peter's Episcopal Cathedral reclaims this ancient practice and with it the spirit of dignity and reverence for loved ones at rest within the communion of saints.

A columbarium (from columba, "dove", meaning a series of recessed niches to receive inurned cremains) usually is set aside out of sight in a garden or building. A distinctive characteristic of this sacred facility is location. Our columbarium is placed in the memorial garden, literally in the heart of the Cathedral campus..

This sanctuary garden has been in existence since 1950 as a consecrated scattering and cremains garden. The 120-year-old Cathedral  looks over the internal Memorial Garden.  This gives the columbarium and garden a protected and serene setting for anyone wanting to sit and meditate or to view the memorials while visiting the Cathedral.   In 2009, as part of St. Peter's new building program, 184 columbarium niches are planned to look out over the existing Memorial Garden.  The earth-toned granite and bronze-fronted niches will front the south walls of the Cathedral, contemplatively blending with the historical structure of St. Peter's Cathedral, originally built in 1889.

The niches are 12 inches by 12 inches by 12 inches and are designed to hold 2 standard size urns.

St. Peter's began its adjacent building  project in 2008 to erect 48,000 sq. feet 3-story  building for church ministries.  This space includes a 6000 sq foot parish hall which can be used for public events.  Included in the construction is a state-of -the art commercial kitchen.

The City Peace Garden
